At the center website of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a shepherd boy. His being was untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was to tend to his herd of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind through the lone tree on the peak were his only associates. Day upon day, guarding his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous scheme.
Tales of predators prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the townsfolk.
One morning he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but saw nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a few more days. However, one day, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
